A large music collection is something to be proud of, but if you have it on your hard drive, organizing it may be difficult. Placing everything in separate folders can be accomplished, but when it comes to basic information about a track's artist, album and so on, you would need specialized software to edit this information. This is where you will find TagScanner's features very helpful. It will read any tag information, let you edit it, rename the files themselves, perform online searches and much more.

The setup process is standard, meaning that you will have to select a destination folder, tick an option to place a shortcut on your desktop and perform other basic actions. The software is compatible with most Windows versions and you can use it on various audio and tag formats.

The software's features include a music renamer, a tag editor, tag processor and a list maker. You can switch from one to another by clicking the navigation tabs on the upper edge of the interface. You will find similar layouts under each tab. A files list, on the left half of the interface is where you can add your audio files, in various formats and you can edit their names or tags with the options found on the right half. You only need to load your files once, after which you will find the same list, regardless of which navigation tab you click.

You can rename multiple files in one run by using a series of place holders, so they will have similar names. For example, if you click the %album%, %year% and %artist% place holders, they will be automatically typed in a dialog box. The order in which you select these items will reflect on the names of the files.

The tag editor can be used to change any information about an audio track, including its title, artist, album, year and much more. You can also associate a picture with an album and add lyrics with individual tracks. If you have no information to insert, while editing the tags, or you have no idea what tracks a certain album includes, you can use the tag processor. Just type in one or more keywords and click a Search button. The results will be listed immediately and you will be able to see all the tracks from a certain album. You will also find its cover which can be downloaded instantly. TagScanner can search in various databases, such as Amazon, FreeDB, MusicBrainz and more.

The list maker makes it possible to export a list of your loaded files in formats like TXT, HTML, XML, CSV and more. Before exporting, you can choose an ANSI, UTF-8 or UTF-16 encoding and tick a few options to make the list HTML compatible and others.

Pros

TagScanner supports multiple tag formats and it lets you edit them in a very flexible manner. It offers a large number of functions, which are well organized, under separate tabs. The software is lightweight and it is free, so you can start renaming your audio files or editing their tags right away.

Cons

You will need a few minutes to study all the features. TagScanner provides you with everything you need to change any aspect of your audio files.
